Where do you source your wood?
I get most of my wood from sawmills around Bristol and Somerset. I use only native and naturalised woods in my work such as ash, oak, beech and sycamore and the majority of these come from local private estates and councils.
Occasionally I use exotic woods such as american black walnut and sapele - these I only use when I get them as offcuts from other workshops.
How much does bespoke furniture cost?
Of course, the price of bespoke pieces varies based on the complexity of the design and build, and the wood used. For instance, a bookshelf built from English Oak is going to cost more than one made from poplar or pine.
I will be transparent about cost from the start of the process, and if you have a budget in mind please do tell me and I will be able to adapt accordingly. Bespoke furniture is never going to match big box furniture shops in price, as every item is handmade by me from local materials, rather than in a production line in an unethical factory. But I can guarantee that it will last a lot longer, be much better for the environement and of course, be completely unique.
Where did your woodworking journey start?
In 2021, I built myself a tiny home on wheels to live in as an alternative to a house and a mortgage. I taught myself everything from the internet and books and eventually, by the time I finished, I realised I wanted to learn how to work with wood properly and make a living from it. It's been my life ever since. I have also now lived in my tiny house on a farm in Somerset for three years.
What tools do you use?
When I started, I had nothing but a set of chisels and a saw. Now, I am lucky enough to be based in a co-operative workshop giving me access to large machinery and power tools, however I still use hand tools every day in my work. Most of my work is made from a combination of both.
